From a TEDx event in 2015,
Video 03 is a presentation by Jeff Havens where he uses his clever presentation skills to brings forth some of
the key reasons as to why most of the employees today are not engaged in their work.
The speaker clearly distinguishes between “Satisfied” and “Engaged” employees. He
also stresses on the significance of leaders (the leadership style) on employee engagement with examples of popular leaders Steve Jobs and President George Washington. The speaker also elaborates
on the “sandwich” technique which leaders can use when providing negative feedback
to employees in a more effective way.

Adding to the post,Employee engagement is not only about the company and the manager, but also the embodiment of one's own personality and attitude towards life. Some people will only have the motivation and input in their lives. They have their own lives. They don't rely on others to motivate them, and they don't rely on companies to get them engaged(Graber, 2013).
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment! Interesting thoughts. I would agree that some employees do not need to be motivated extrinsically as they are organically (intrinsically) motivated. However, I would argue, it would be tough (if not impossible) for an organization to separate the employees who fall in to this category and the ones who do not. Hence, it's critical that the organization takes initiative to motivate and grow employee engagement across the board.
DeleteMoreover, when the workload or stress is high at an organisation, employees are ore disengaged. therefore, good management will have to look into these factors for better performance (Lockwood, 2007).
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment! Though excessive workload and stress could be factors why employees get disengaged, I would have to disagree with the first statement you made which implies workload and stress always causes employee disengagement. In my experience, as long as the work is meaningful/challenging and the employee is recognized for their efforts, majority of the employees do not see workload necessarily as a source of frustration or disengagement.
DeleteAdding on to your post. Lack of rewards and recognition can lead to exhaustion, and proper rewards and recognition are very important for employee engagement. When an employee receives a reward and recognition from the organization they feels forced to respond with a higher level of commitment (Saks,2006).
ReplyDeleteThank you for your addition. While I would agree with the fact that lack of rewards and recognition may impact employee engagement levels of an organization, it's important to highlight that reward and recognition alone may not be sufficient to drive engagement. The nature of the work the employees are assigned to do, can intrinsically trigger their engagement to increase. Employees today prefer work that is intellectually challenging and interesting which also gives them a sense of accomplishment while making themselves feel significant in the organizational big picture (Armstrong, 2009).
Deleteleadership is a fact that effect Employees not engaged in an organization. an excellent leaders help create and spread confidence throughout their company by being exemplars of high ethical and performance standards. If employees see their leader as a confident and ethical person, they will strive to be like their leader. (Ambler, 2007)
ReplyDeleteAgreed! Reilly (2014) also states that the leaders of an organization should get to know their employees at a personal level, in order to drive engagement. The author also states that each interaction a manager has with her/his employee's is an opportunity to increase the employees engagement level.
DeleteHi Nadeeranga, Well written article and thanks for sharing. Recent research has shown that having life‐work balance is an important factor in enabling engagement (Johnson, 2004) Balanced employees tend to feel more motivated, engaged and less stressed out at work, which thereby increases company productivity and reduces the number of conflicts among coworkers and management.
ReplyDeleteHi Sithari, a very valid point, thank you for adding! In the recent years, work-life balance has become a hot topic and more and more organisations are moving towards concepts that empower work-life balance such as flexible working hours. As Macey and Schneider (2008) concluded on their analysis, engaged
Deleteemployees could be considered a key competitive advantage an organization could posses, hence it makes all the sense for an organization to invest on work-life balance enhancement initiatives.
